We discuss the origins of weaving and how it has evolved. Students learn about the terms warp and the weft and loom. Cardboard looms are prepped for students with warp strings. They start with the under-over-under-pattern which is tabby weaving. Those that need more challenge also tryout soumak and/or Egyptian knot technique (pictured below).

In the scratch art project, students cover an index card with oil pastels and create an abstract design. Then black paint is painted on the paper with at least 2 coats. When it is dry, students scratch out a design related to nature with a wooden stylus. Students learn to scratch out the light parts of their drawing and the dark parts are untouched. They learn that this technique of scratching a top layer to reveal a contrasting color is called sgraffito and is used in pottery and ceramics. Students learn to work with any mistakes as they are scratching into their work.
