In this project, students drew an imagined city in one-point perspective. Students learned how to draw buildings from a worm’s eye view by aligning vertical lines of buildings (including windows and doors) with the vanishing point, which is the central dot in their circle paper. This technique establishes a sense of depth and space as things furthest away from the ground appear smaller in the distance. Students are encouraged to make different buildings and have a variety in height, width, shape, and line quality. Students decided if it is daytime or nighttime in their imagined scene and depicted the sky accordingly. Windows can show light, reveal something, or simply have a reflective glass texture. This project offers creative freedom and ownership in artistic decisions within a guided structure of the one-point perspective technique. It’s fascinating to see how students’ identities, interests, and experiences emerge through the narratives they create while stepping into the role of architect for their imagined city.
