The keyhole drawing project is an extension of students’ Surrealism Unit. We started with a discussion about the Secret Aventine Keyhole in Rome which perfectly frames 3 different countries: Malta, Italy, and the Vatican City. In relation to the mysterious world and door trope, students compared  illustrations from children’s books, The Chronicles of Narnia and Alice in Wonderland. They also discussed short clips from Alice in Wonderland, Coraline, and The Chronicles of Narnia.  For the keyhole drawing, students created imagined scenes through the lens of a chosen key hole shape. They were guided through the process of drawing the keyholes which includes parallel lines and value gradation. Students had the freedom in the subject matter and were encouraged to draw something strange and unusual. After drawing the scene, they were prompted to draw the texture and style of their door surrounding the hole. This a good art project for middle school because it blends imagination, storytelling, technical drawing skills, cultural exploration, and makes interdisciplinary connections across art, literature, and geography. Furthermore, it is an emotionally resonant and creatively flexible art project.
