Students participated in discussions about the elements of Impressionism while exploring works of Vincent van Gogh. Expressive brushwork, vivid color, and implied movement are key characteristics of Impressionist work. Artworks explored were Self-Portrait, The Starry Night, Sunflower, and Olive Trees. In this project, they were guided, step-by step, in drawing two types of sunflowers, both front-facing and side-facing. Additionally, students conveyed a sense of movement through combined use of markers and crayons on paper. Students learned how make petals and the vase look 3-dimensional through value gradation and lines. Marker is used to create dark bold lines while the crayon creates a lighter color and a rougher texture. Students explored mixed media techniques through the use of both markers and crayons. For example, students discovered the texture coloring technique while using the side of the crayon. The project allows for choice in colors, style of vase, and background. Impressionist Flowers is a good art project for middle school because it integrates art history, technique, personal expression, and exploration of materials. The project balances scaffolded structure with ownership and choice.
