Haunted House

Students learned about the roles and responsibilities of an architect. Students discussed the similarities in architect, Antoni Gaudi’s Casa Mila & Casa Batllo. They also learned about Gaudi’s Catholic minor basilica, La Segrada Familia, which is still being built decades after his Gaudi’s death. His work both garnered criticism (Picasso, for example) and admiration from artists (such as Dali).  In the Haunted House project, students use multiple resources to make a sketch and plan of a haunted/unusual house prior to final drawing. Students are provided with a reference with various drawn architectural details and spooky details. Students make creative choices in several architectural details for their house and “spooky” details to fill the space around the house in their final work.

Kusama Pumpkins

Students explored the life and work of Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama, focusing on her use of repetition, polka dots, and immersive environments. Artworks discussed were Pumpkin, Dancing Pumpkin, Pumpkin painting triptych, Installation: All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins, and a fashion collab with Louis Vuitton. Taking inspiration from the patterns and pumpkins in Kusama’s work, students created a drawing of pumpkins of different sizes and shapes and drew different patterns for each. Students were guided step-by-step in drawing a pumpkin. For this project, the paper had to be filled with uniquely shaped pumpkins. Patterns in the drawing were created through repeating lines, shapes, and colors.
