Food Trucks

First, students discussed the responsibilities of a graphic designer. In the activity Guess the Logo, students identified various brand logos, with some partially shown. The activity demonstrated how branding uses simple visuals to create instant recognition. Students were introduced to and identified color scheme in several food trucks. Color schemes included warm colors, cool colors, analogous colors, and monochromatic. They practiced lettering (bubble, block, and fancy lettering) in preparation for their logo. Students then brainstormed a name and an original logo for their food truck. Students then applied a color scheme in their food truck/logo design with color pencil. Truck details such as windshield, windows, headlights, etc. were also applied to their design. Lastly, the food truck was assembled through cutting, folding, and gluing their completed truck template. This is an important lesson for middle schoolers because it combines real-world relevance, creative expression, and design thinking. It allows students to infuse their own interests, or cultural background into their vision that comes to life in a 3d sculpture.
