Students describe Tim Burton’s animation style through a comparison of 4 of his characters from Frankenweenie. His style is characterized by large eyes and large head, dot pupils, dark smokey rings around the eyes, the contrasting use of black, a button-like nose, pointy chin, small mouth, and small neck. Students are guided step by step in an example drawing of a Tim Burton-inspired snow man starting with the head and shoulders, eyes, nose and mouth, hat, and accessories and arms. Students are provided with a reference of a variety of features that they may choose to include in their snowman drawing. The pencil shading technique of smudging with a tissue or finger helped to achieve the smokey and 3-dimensional look that Tim Burton has in his work. Students also worked on a background for their snowman. Lastly, they are instructed to outline certain areas of their work with black sharpie. This is an engaging art lesson because it integrates stylistic analysis, pop culture connections, and technical shading skills in a way that feels fun, expressive, and accessible.
