Blinking Origami Dragon Eye

In this exciting paper sculpture project, students created a 3d blinking dragon eye using simple origami folding techniques in combination with drawing. I provided step by step instructions on to draw and apply color to the pupil, eyelids, and scales with colored pencils. This project allowed students to express their creativity through the exploration of mythical creatures while strengthening spatial awareness and fine motor skills. Within the origami unit, students are introduced to the origins and cultural tradition of origami and papermaking.  We explored how origami has influence in different industries such as fashion, modular installations, and miura-ori pattern in engineering. This is a good middle school art project because it combines cultural learning, interdisciplinary learning, imaginative thinking, and hands-on skill-building.
