Value Mandalas
Students learned about 3 different types of balance: Symmetrical Balance, Asymmetrical Balance, and Radial Balance through discussion of artworks. In this project, students focused on radial balance through mandalas. Buddhist monks create large scale mandalas with spiritual symbols over the course of a few days with colored sand as a meditative process. Students were guided to divide up the concentric circle base into 8 “slices” using a ruler. These lines became guidelines to ensure accurate placement for radial symmetry. Students were instructed to repeat shapes and designs in each “ring” starting from the center and varying their designs as they worked outward. Lastly, students added value techniques (Blending/Smudging, Stippling, Hatching, and Crosshatching) and bold/thick lines with pencil in their mandala.
