Students created an Identity Map based on aspects of their identity (3 character traits and 3 hobbies/ interests). Students learned about Brooklyn-based artist, Aaron Meshon, who created a large poster map of Brooklyn. We discussed the differences between regular maps we have seen before and his map, the use of scale in how he depicts objects that are representative of the communities and specific landmark places in Brooklyn, his banner ribbon, and his use of color. Students were guided through the process of creating their own island map: 1. Identity Map Brainstorm worksheet, 2. Banner Ribbon, 3. Map Key, 4. Compass Rose, 5. Outlining using fine point sharpies, 6. Coloring with colored pencils and markers. This project is great for middle school students because it supports social awareness and identity development by helping them to make connections between their values, interests, and lived experiences. Students build empathy when they share and learn about their classmates’ identities and backgrounds.
