Before starting to draw their own unique surreal room, students learned step-by-step how to create a room in one-point perspective using a ruler and pencil on square paper. Students learned the importance of lining up the ruler to the vanishing point to establish the angles needed to draw a table, door, window, picture frame, light fixture in one-point perspective. At the start of this Surrealism unit, students learn about surrealism and what word “surreal” means. Surreal artworks of various artists  (MC Escher, Rene Magritte, Giorgio de Chirico, Salvador Dali, Sandy Skoglund, and Maurice Sendak) were explored to highlight the qualities of a surreal room and gain inspiration for their own surreal room drawing. Color theory and color pencil burnishing and blending techniques are explored as they color in their work. It is important that students understand how to draw within the conventions of realism before they can understand and “break” the conventions in Surrealist artwork in general and in their own work.
