Students first were engaged in discussion about light and what is revealed in masterworks featuring moonlit landscapes. Masterworks included landscapes by Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, George Inness, Claude-Joseph Vernet, and Frederic Edwin Church. We discussed and identified components of a landscape: foreground, midground, and background in work by Joshua Shaw, Vincent van Gogh, and Katsushika Hokusai as well. Students then brainstormed imagined landscapes through thumbnail sketches and selected their favorite to plan further with colors. Black paper was chosen for the project because it has a good undertone for a night scene. Students drafted their final piece on black paper using pencil and then used color pencils. Students were advised that if they wanted brighter colors they would need to have a layer of white underneath to add color to. Students lastly added highlights and shadows using white and black china markers as a finishing touch. The process of drawing light on dark paper really got students to pay attention to the direction of light sources. The project allowed students to be very creative and bring their imagined scenes to life!
