To celebrate the hard work of our art students, our visual arts department holds annual spring art shows. Families, staff, and students were invited to attend the after school art show opening. The first art show post-covid was during the 2023-2024 school year. It was held in a classroom and we utilized folding arts display boards in addition to walls, bullteins, and tables. After the opening, classes and staff were invited to see the show during the school day over the following weeks. The second art show was held on the first floor’s vestibule, main lobby, auditorium, and a few select hallways. We collaborated and worked very hard over several days during and after school hours to put up the show. Responsibilities included: selecting, matting, and labeling work, adhering the work to walls with Mavalus tape, and using ladders for higher places. I created the arts flyer for the show. We prepared refreshments for our visitors. I discussed student artwork and performance in class with their families, and discussed future plans in preparation for arts high school auditions. I always let students’ families know that I am available as a resource for arts audition preparation- especially as a teacher who has had students go on to arts high schools and student that attended arts camps, and as a former student that was in their position myself (I often show my own audition portfolio to my students). Every day of the art show, students and staff saw artwork right when they entered the school’s doors, helping to create a very welcoming and warm environment. Since we received a lot of praise about the artwork, we decided to keep it up for as long as possible.

Every year I submit student work for the annual District 22 Art Show at P.S. 207 Elizabeth G. Leary. This is an interesting event because I can get inspired by the work being done by different art teachers of different grade levels across the district.
